As part of the move to a full fibre broadband infrastructure, the technology used within the UK broadband and telephony network is changing, as it is in most countries around the world.
In 2018, the UK Government recognised – as part of The Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review – that after decades in use for both voice and data services the UK Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), was coming to the end of its life and would need to be replaced with newer technologies.
Over the past 12 months, Openreach (BT) have been making plans that will result in the UK’s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) being switched off by 2025 as they proceed with the implementation of their ‘All IP’ network. In the UK, the upgrade to ‘All IP’ means that the existing, predominantly copper based PSTN telephony network, will be entirely replaced by a faster ‘All IP’ fibre network and infrastructure.
At the moment, there is no definitive time scale as to what areas will be switched off sooner or later.
This change to ‘All IP’ is likely to have an impact on your remotely monitored intruder alarm system, both in terms of compatibility and/or disruption to the monitoring of your intruder alarm when the migration to ‘All IP’ takes place.
how this may impact on you
Intruder alarm systems, like the one you may have installed, that use the copper infrastructure to send alarm messages to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), will not be compatible with the new ‘All IP’ telephony network.
You will need to upgrade your signalling unit to ensure continued monitoring of your alarm. We are suggesting upgrading to wireless (radio) signalling. This can be either single path or dual path and can be tailored to meet your individual requirements and the requirements of your insurance company. Wireless signalling will ensure that you are fully connected at all times, even in the event of a power cut, which other types of signalling such as LAN connections, will not offer.
If you are already one of our customers, we can attend to the changeover the at same time as we attend for one of our pre-planned service visits. If not, we will offer a special fee for you depending on your location and what system you have installed. Any costs involved can be offset by the fact that there are no additional call charges with these systems. In addition, if you currently pay for a dedicated telephone line for your alarm system, this can be cancelled, which means that you will save the cost of line rental. All this can be explained by our surveyor if you choose to have us visit your property.

You will need to confirm with your insurance company that these changes are being made and they are happy for you to change to the type of signalling that we are suggesting.
